The company grew out of the restaurant that still anchors the corner.

Mid-1980s
Two Taiwanese immigrants, among them chef David Ling, open David's Taiwanese Gourmet in an Elmhurst mini-mall to share the food and culture of home.

1995
The restaurant moves to 84-02 Broadway, at the corner of St. James Avenue. Its two floors fill with artifacts of rural Taiwan: century-old rice-field rain gear, a wooden rice thresher and Qing Dynasty wood carvings.

1998
David Ling buys the building from its original owner and founds D.C. Ling Broadway Realty Inc. to own and manage it.

Today
The building is still family owned and operated. Taiwanese Gourmet is run by Alvin Chen and his family, who keep the kitchen focused on time-honored Taiwanese dishes, while Chef Ling went on to help establish Main Street Imperial Taiwanese in Flushing.
